An Eastern West

“You cannot ignore

our persistent presence ~

We will not be silent

against a tyrant

such as hate.”

-Lucine Yeghiazaryan

An Eastern West is an ensemble piece exploring distance and ways we honor our traditions while away from home. Commissioned by the Higher Ground Festival, and created in collaboration with the Armenian Folk Trio YY Sisters.

This collaborative 15-minute suite features six Armenian songs and traditional dances adapted by Lucine Yeghiazaryan and Emily Vartanian. Dedicated to the victims and survivors of the Armenian Genocide, the work explores ways to engage with culture while far from home, and family programming also includes a lesson in the Middle Eastern dance Kochari.

Meet the collaborators.

The dynamic Armenian folk trio YY Sisters includes Lucine Yeghiazaryan, Tatev Yeghiazaryan, and Kate Victor. General Mischief began collaborating with them in 2016 as part of the Higher Ground Festival in Inwood, NY.
