Recreation

Clever choreography….let yourself revel in live entertainment guaranteed to brighten your mood as the colorful mobile materializes before your very eyes and the professional dancers move with grace and precision.

— Center on the Aisle

A collaboration with actor and sculptor Kevin Reese.

Mr. Reese designed and constructed a 20-foot overhead mobile specifically for this work with the help of hundreds of volunteers from Washington D.C. as part of the Atlas Performing Arts Center's "Mobilizing Our Community" project.

Choreographed by Ms. Vartanian, Recreation combines Horton-based movement vocabulary with the puzzle of assembling the 37-piece mobile sculpture in the course of the work.

Recreation is also set to music by composer Donna Viscuso and performed by the VNote Ensemble.  New costume and design elements have been added to the work since it was last performed in 2017, bringing the Alexander Calder-inspired visual elements much more vividly to life.

Meet our collaborators.

The work features playful movement, spoken word, and gorgeous original music by the composers, the Oakland-based 41street Ensemble.
